Upcoming Minority Health Month Events

PRESS RELEASE

April is designated Minority Health Month in Ohio. This annual
celebration of wellness highlights both issues affecting minority
populations in Ohio as well as celebrates the people and
organizations that are making a difference in their communities.
Public and private partners throughout the United States will join
Ohioans in providing thousands of health activities developed to
improve the health of minorities and to increase awareness about and
among minority citizens.

The Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio is proud to be a
member of this team addressing the health needs of the Native
population and the community at large. In April, NAICCO will
present three events to celebrate our successes and to address
critical issues affecting our communities.

On April 11, 2003, we will have a dinner and reception that will
include a presentation on the health needs of the Native population
in central Ohio and an overview of available programs addressing
some of these issues.

On April 18, 2003, we will present "Tobacco is Sacred", which will
include a discussion of the detrimental effects of commercial
tobacco on Native Americans and the importance of traditional
tobacco use both spiritually and culturally.

On April 25, 2003, we will present "The Four Directions Nutrition
Model", which addresses issues related to healthy diets, nutrition
and diabetes. An alternative model, based upon the ideals of the
medicine wheel, is presented that shows the benefits of returning to
a more traditional diet.

All of these events will be held at NAICCO, 67 East Innis Avenue,
Columbus, OH. They are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. These events
are free and open to the public. All are invited and encouraged to
attend to learn more about health issues affecting our communities
and to celebrate the progress we have made.

The Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio is able to provide
much needed services to the community through the financial support
of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health and the American Legacy
Foundation.
